Goshen Fair a gold mine for charities

GOSHEN — Three good days at the Goshen Fair are all it takes for American Legion Post 46 to raise enough money to fund its charities for one year.

If Saturday was an indication of what's to come today and Monday, Post 46 is on target to rake in some serious cash. Post members and some volunteers manned the post's food booth near the fairgrounds entrance and were kept hopping by a constant parade of customers on a bright and breezy day.

"We do one thing at the fair and we do it right," Post 46 Commander Ed Wright said. "The money we make will carry us through the year."

Post 46 funds scholarships, donates clothing to state veterans hospitals, plants new flags each year at the graves of Goshen veterans, and holds veterans recognition programs. It also has an active Ladies Auxiliary that works to benefit the community. Wright said the post will cook 800 pounds of hamburgers and 400 pounds of hot dogs over the weekend. A few burgers and dogs were cooked by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Dan Malloy, who stopped in during his campaign visit to the fairgrounds.

" I think it's great that the charities are able to get their funds at the fair. That way families can have fun and charities can do business to help others. It sure beats those phone calls! "
